Rozenn and Pythagoras

Rozenn's dad had shown her Pythagoras' Theorem at home, and she brought it in and explained it to us!

This is normally something children do in secondary school, but we got some idea of what it was all about.

In the picture there's a right angle triangle. We know two of the sides - in this case the shorter sides are 3 long and 4 long. We want to find out the length of the longs side.

Here's Rozenn explaining it:

And here are the Cuisenaire rods we used to help understand it better:

Mr Gregg was particularly pleased that Rozenn learnt about this because it's one of his favourite bits of mathematics!

  1. Rozenn,
This is very impressive! We have been learning about right angles here, but not the Pythagoras Theorem.
    Keep up the good work!

    1. Thank you for your encouraging comment. I learnt that after waking up in the morning and my dad saying: '' Did you know that a*2 + b*2 = c*2 ?"

  2. Pythagoras and Euclid would be very proud. The Pythagorean Theorem is also one of my favorite topics, especially Pythagorean Triples.
