Cubes to squares... BIG

In our exploration of number patterns with Cuisenaire rods (see the previous post) Clara and Rozenn began to explore the cubes to squares puzzle we'd looked at together yesterday:
Using cubes of each rod in turn
they built up the square from the centre.
Claudia was busy making cubes - so she joined in!
At this point Mr Gregg thought it would be wise to stop - it would be difficult to find 49 sevens. But the girls were determined to press on - and they did it:
"Probably best to stop now," Mr Gregg said. "You'll never find 64 eights."
But - and Alicia joined the team now - the girls were not going to stop.
Nines involved going to all the teachers in the school, and working through playtime.
"Hooray!"

The nines complete
For the tens, we couldn't find a hundred of them, so the girls used some of the base 10 equipment:
And - drum roll! - here it is!
There's a strange pattern of the odd and even numbers - can you see it?
And the lengths of the squares follows a neat pattern too!
On Friday we'll have another look at the numbers involved.
This pattern is amazing and beautiful - well done to the four girls for pushing on with it!

UPDATE
Alicia has some Cuisenaire rods at home - and this morning she brought in ten tens. Now almost all the tens are orange like they should be!

The museum

On Friday we went to the museum of Toulouse for a trip. There were all sorts of things. But we started off by sketching the elephant. It was very hard, even though elephants are my favourite animals!

Afterwards, we went to see the gems. I chose the amethyst with white crystal in it! We also had to write a simile. This is mine: the sharp white diamond like icicles hanging from a purple cliff.

After that, we went to see the moving continents, how the world has changed over the years. (It has changed a lot!) he one that we thought was a kangaroo and so we checked it up and guess what... We wer

Meanwhile, we went to the department where all the skeletons were. We had to choose one as a group. We chose te right – almost – it was a wallaby.

Finally, we came to the last department before lunch! It was where the treasures were from all over the world. We had to choose one. I chose the one that came from Asia. It is what they use as an oar. It was pointy at the end and had a pattern on it because they use it for ceremonies.

Nelson Mandela

This book is about Nelson Mandela who was a South African.
I will tell you a bit of information that I got from the book.

Some time ago in South Africa they thought that black people didn’t have the same rights that white people had, for example black people weren't allowed to vote -  this was called the apartheid.
Nelson Mandela stood up for his people and country. Although he spent 27 years in prison, he asked for reconciliation. When he died in December 2013 aged 95, the country had a state funeral as he was seen as the "father of the nation".
The book talks about his young years, his family life, his political engagement and his time in jail.
I think Nelson Mandela is a hero because he had the passion and the courage to fight for what he believed in.
Hope you enjoy it! This book is factual and political so have a go at reading it! Try and learn more about Nelson Mandela.

ELEPHANTS ARE DYING

I love Elephants so I can't stand them dying. Helpfull chubby little friendly animals, too wonderful to die! People are hunting them for their tusks and skin!

These elephants are making  a love heart with their trunks.  A very pretty silhouette! So try and help elephants by adopting one this year!

Rozenn and Pythagoras

Rozenn's dad had shown her Pythagoras' Theorem at home, and she brought it in and explained it to us!

This is normally something children do in secondary school, but we got some idea of what it was all about.

In the picture there's a right angle triangle. We know two of the sides - in this case the shorter sides are 3 long and 4 long. We want to find out the length of the longs side.

Here's Rozenn explaining it:

And here are the Cuisenaire rods we used to help understand it better:

Mr Gregg was particularly pleased that Rozenn learnt about this because it's one of his favourite bits of mathematics!

My Elephant treasure

My treasure is an elephant which I got on the last day of school from my best friend Natasha. So, as it is from my best friend, it means a lot to me. At that time I absolutely loved elephants (I still do!) so I think that’s why she bought it for me.

I went round to Natasha house once. When I was there I saw this cute and cuddly face of an elephant. I knew the second I saw it I had to have one. So this is him:

Awesome Elephant!

The collection is made near Chicago by a company called Ty Inc. You can get different animals like Panda, giraffe, elephant, dog, hedgehog, cat, penguin, monkey, ladybird, owl,

Leopard, horse, guinea pig, lion, rabbit, bat. They look a bit like a tarsier with big eyes. Dont you find them cute?

So that is the story of me and Peanut. Thank you for reading.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie Bucket is very  poor. He lives with his parents and his four grandparents in an old wooden house on the edge of a big city.  His grandparents have been in their bed for more than 20 years!

Mr Willy Wonka is the most famous chocolate maker in the entire world.  He has put a golden ticket in five ordinary chocolate bars.  Whoever gets one of these chocolate bars gets to visit his chocolate factory.

The first four winners (Veruca Salt, Mike Teavee, Violet Bauregarde & Augustus Gloop) are greedy.  The fifth winner is Charlie but he gets one chocolate bar a year and that is on his birthday so how does he get the last golden ticket?  He buys the winning chocolate bar with a five pence coin he finds on the street, how lucky!!

Bad things happen to Veruca Salt, Mike Teavee, Violet Bauregarde & Augustus Gloop because they are badly behaved children.  However Charlie and grandpa Joe finish the visit safely...

Mike Teavee is my favourite character because I played his part in my previous school production.  I like the Oompa-Loompas as well because they look funny.

I like the Veruca Salt scene because when she falls in the hole her dad pokes his head down and a squirrel pushes him in.  It is hilarious!

I will recommend this book because it is very humorous but it also sends the message that you have to be a good person to be rewarded.

haiku

It tickles my hand
It’s like a small ladybird.
Go back to your tree.

Rozenn

Red spotty firebug,
You look like a ladybird,
You have lovely spots.

Claudia

Sleepy praying priest,
Wish good luck to the firebug:
Fly baby firebug!

Jacques

It smells like cherry,
Lavender feels soft like fur,
It has flowers on.

Amelia

On the lavender
There is one last small flower
Which is dying now.

Alicia

Olive tree, cold, freeze,
Rosemary, maple tree burns,
Lavender curls up.

Pablo

Bushes that smell nice:
Lavender and Rosemary;
Not those spiky balls.

Tobias

Old olive tree curled,
Enjoying the gentle breeze,
Sprouting fresh olives.

Mimi

 Light sings through the trees.
Leaves fall with a crunch of bugs.
The bugs are pretty crazy.

Penelope

When the red leaves fall,
The red firebugs fall as well,
And caterpillars.

Cristina

When the leaves fall down
They turn red and yellow up down
There are also fruit.

Maia

The maple is big,
Leaves have only six sides.
See, a spiky ball!

Fernando

Green spikes everywhere,
Maple tree hung with stink bombs:
I gave one to Jacques.

Gustavo

Red maple tree leaf,
Falling on the short green grass,
I take you back home.

Clara

The outline is white.
It looks like it is cracking:
A baby bird’s egg.

Pebble Questions

We each brought a pebble to school. Here are some of the questions we came up with to ask about our pebbles.

We've used a microscope to look closer at each pebble.

For guidance, we had the "Seven Ws" in mind:
