And here''s Must be Santa:

Thanks to Mrs Presset for the video.

What a great bunch of elves!

Rolling like Galileo

After Galileo was put under house arrest, he returned to some of his earlier science work. In particular, he looked at the way things fall.

We looked at this video that told us about this:

There was lots of interesting vocabulary, quite difficult for Year 4, so we had a look at a Padlet wall of words to help understand some of it.

Galileo had found, for the first time, that there was a pattern of numbers in the way things fall: the odd numbers - 1,3,5,7...

The ball was speeding up all the time:

We are beginning to try to reproduce Galileo's experiment in the classroom.

What's this? Duplo? What's that got to do with it??

Well, the Duplo was holding our slope up.

We had to try different heights of Duplo to get a slow and even run of the ball.

This worked:

Time to time the run.

These are our times. On the left is the additional distance travelled, on the right the time from the start.

Here they are in a neater table:

Hmmm... This is not what Galileo predicted. He said that the numbers in the yellow column should be the same. But for us the ball was not speeding up as much as Galileo said it should be!

What could be wrong? Any ideas?

Painting our creatures

Our Niki de Saint Phalle creatures have returned! Frances Marsden has fired them for us, sending them back are (and brittle!) and white.

So we set about painting them bright colours, in the style of Niki de Saint Phalle.

All that's needed now is a coat of varnish, and then they're finished!

We have gone skiing

The Sunday we went to skiing. The station is called Monts d'Olmes. When I entered I did not know skiing, but at one of the evenings the ski instructor came.
He showed me how to ski without poles, then I took the green piste, and my sister was also with me.  Then my father wondered if we were brave enough to take a few laps.  But my mother was cold and already we needed to go because it was so late.

Here are some photos:

James and the Giant Peach

This story is about James and his disgusting Aunts.
His parents got eaten by a rhino (`which is pretty strange because rhinos are vegetarian).

He was looking at the seaside then he saw a strange man with a bag of strange stuff.  This is how it all began.

The Aunts get famous and so on and so on...

James on the other hand , He went inside the peach and met Giant insects ( I would of not have liked that).
Then the peach rolled off the mountain and into the sea.. (Well he wanted to see the sea).

They saw sharks that were trying to eat the peach.  All of the birds liked the look of the worm so that gave James an idea.  Mrs Spider weaves some string and then James captures the birds.

Suddenly the peach flew with 501 birds.  It was such a view until  night.  At night  there was cloud men. (they were very  hairy).

Stupid Centipede was calling the cloud men names like : Idiots, Nincompoops, Half-wits and Blunderheads!!!! Then the cloud men looked round and saw them they instantly through the snow balls at the peach .

I like this book because it is very funny!

Crime at the Guggenheim

Hello, my name is Isabella and I am in Bilbao, Spain, with my parents. First thing we are going to do is visit the Guggenheim. I'ts an art museum.

I walked inside and it was so beautiful. But I didn't know where I was going. I lost my parents. OH NO! I was trying to find them everywhere but they were not there!

Suddenly an alarm was ringing. Someone had stolen a painting! There was a theft! And I didn't know where my parents were. The thief could steal me.

My parents found me and I was happy. My parents told me to get away from the Guggenheim so we did.
We waited one minute outside. But the ground shook and we were terrified.

And then the Guggenheim EXPLODED. The thief had put a bomb there.

We had to find who it was. But first we had to take a little pau… I couldn't speak more. There was a black figure in our restaurant. I thought it was our thief. It was!!! We went directly to the police station to say it.
The police came with us to the restaurant and we showed him who it was. The police put the man in prison. His name was:

Bill Gates! The guy who invented Microsoft. I was very disappointed.

The Twits

The Twits were really scary. They kept pet monkeys and ate bird pies because Mr Twit put some extra sticky glue on the tree. One day some little boys climbed the sticky tree.

Mr Twit saw them, he was really angry and they got stuck in the tree the smallest boy had an idea, it was to pull there jeans off and keep their pants on.

At the end of the story the monkeys escaped from their cage and some of the birds came and help to stick all the furniture to the ceiling and when the Twits got to their house they thought that they were upsidedown...!!!

Pendulum Experiment number 3

When Galileo was in church in Pisa he started watching the light hanging from the ceiling. It was swinging.

He was interested in how it was moving. Sometimes the wind would blow and it would swing more, then gradually it would slow down.

So he began experimenting with pendulums. He tried changing the size of the swing, the weight at the end of the string and the length of the string, and each time measured how long the swing took.

We did the same three experiments. Here's the third one:

So we found out that the pendulum with a short string completed its swing more quickly than the one with a long string.

With the first two experiments, we found that the size of the swing and the weight on the end of the string made hardly any difference to the time the swing took. Galileo found the same thing and used the sameness of the pendulum swing to design a clock that would keep steady time: a pendulum clock. This was the beginning of pendulum clocks:

How the pendulum gives the tick tock of the clock

Galileo's design
The design built

Here it is, made out of cardboard by J. E. Johnson:

For Elisa (True Story)

One dark night Beethoven was trying his songs out at the piano.
He was getting ready for a party.
His clothes were perfect and he was neat.
When he got there he was on stage and performed his seventh symphony.
Everyone was excited. After the concert, Beethoven was with his friends, drinking beer. Everybody had lots of fun.
Some people played violin and other instruments.
At the party Beethoven saw a girl playing piano. She was playing fantastic songs. He looked at her and he said, "Why dont you play one of my songs?"
She whispered to him : "Because they are to hard to play."
So what Beethoven did is that he made a song for her that was easier to play.
The song was so beautiful it spread through the whole world.
The song didn't have name so people called it For Elisa. But Elisa was not really the girl's name.

This is the For Elisa video:

The Unicorn and the Dragon

Once upon a time there was a lonely Unicorn who didn't have friends. Everybody was mean to her. Until one day someone came to her house. It was a Dragon. They played together all day very happy.
But that day a Bad dragon came he took the Unicorn!
Dragon wanted to save him. He went flying to the dragon's cave and he defeated his royal guards.
Then he saw the unicorn captured in dragon jail!
He tried to kill the dragon but he was too strong.
The only way to kill him was to get the potion that the Unicorn has.
The Unicorn threw the potion to him and he put it in his mouth.

A little story of Pancakes.

Once upon a time there was a wolf that was very hungry. So he decided to make Pancakes. He took out his recipe book and started reading.
But wolves are not good at reading. So he called his neighbour. But the neighbour didn't want
to help. So he slammed the door. And poor Mr Wolf had to do it all by his self. He needed to
go to the shop to buy the ingredients. So he called Little Red Riding Hood. He wanted a basket, BUT Little Red Riding Hood slammed the door. So Mr wolf had to do it all by himself. He wanted to bake but wolves are not good at baking so he called the Three Little Pigs, BUT they slammed the door and poor Mr Wolf had to do it all by himself. Then the Pancakes were ready and the smell spread through the neighbourhood. All the neighbours came to Mr Wolf's house. They wanted to eat the pancakes but before they could eat them Mr Wolf ate them in one single gulp. He said that they would not help him, so he ate them. So Mr Wolf enjoyed eating the pancakes! YUMMY!

Falling things

The ancient Greek, Aristotle had said that heavy objects fall much faster than light ones. For almost two thousand years everyone had just believed his idea.

But Galileo had a different idea.

He said that weight didn't matter. Any two objects would fall at the same speed.

(Stop watching when you get to the equation!)
Things actually do fall the way Galileo said, not the way Aristotle said.
But, they don't fall at exactly at the same speed. That's because some falling things are more affected by air resistance.
If they were dropped where there was no air, say on the moon, they would fall at the same speed:

We did an experiment to investigate air resistance.
It involved dropping different-sized paper helicopters and seeing which ones fell the fastest. Can you spot  helicopters in any of these pictures?

Here are the our results:

It seems to be what we predicted, which is that the bigger the helicopter is, the longer it takes to fall.

We predicted this because we thought there would be more air resistance with the bigger helicopters.

The Twits

The twits is my favourite Roald Dahl book because it was very funny
and a good book for silly boys.  I love the part where Mr Twit
makes Mrs Twit fly with a hundred balloons above her. I really loved it
when Mrs Twit put her eyeball in Mr Twits cup of beer.
When I read that part I exploded with laghter,I olso nearly laghed
all the way to the end of the book.  the Twits were clumsy old
maggots and disgusting people. my favourite part is when
they shrink into two weeny people with no clothes, this book is about
two people who keep on playing tricks on each other.I think this
book could be more funnier if Mr Twit and Mrs Twit could play more tricks on each other and if Roald Dahl put some  jokes in,this book
was very exciting and I'm looking forword to read The Twits 2.
