Our visit to the Muséum
| The Indian Elephant, named Elephas indicus by Georges Cuvier |
Here we are talking about the whale skeleton:
When we got back we had a little time to write some haiku poems about the things we'd seen in the museum:
Such sweet animals!
So many gorgeous creatures!
Very nice to sketch!
Cristina and Maëlle
Cute as a teddy,
As stripy as a tiger,
Black, white like pandas.
Claudia
The adventurers!
We went to the Muséum
And Jardin des Plantes.
Gustavo, Tino and Matias
Glistenning amber,
Tails swishing from side to side
Genets on the move.
Sanika and Mimi
Fennec foxes live
In the Sahara Desert;
They are very cute.
Ryan
Staring animals,
Silent, sad and unmoving:
Makes me very scared.
Niamh
White as a snowflake,
Big dark black eye on the face,
Long fragile whiskers.
Maria
I went through a room,
We saw what humans have made;
It was beautiful!
Vega
As shiny as gems,
As sharp as forty knives steel knives
As big a ball.
Aksh
A huge elephant,
Stomping and chomping the grass;
So strong yet gentle.
Jesse
The rabbit jumps high,
The rabbit runs very fast,
The rabbit is big.
Sara
Elephant stands still,
It stands there sad all day long.
I think it is cruel.
Niamh
Big, strong and furry
With straight-like ears and long horns,
Light hooves on the ground.
Irene
Stones very shiny
Stones glimmering in the light.
Why are they still here?
Luis
Sharp golden eyes,
Watching me curiously.
Looks like it is real...
Abi
Swooping through the air,
It's going to eat us!
Quick, help us from here!
Rozenn and Penny
It's grey like the floor,
It's huge like an animal,
A big elephant!
Fernando and David
Eyes staring at me.
It was some stuffed animals.
It was a bit sad.
Maia
An enormous whale,
Bones covering the ceiling.
Whales are different.
Pablo and Alicia
Yellow seems like gold,
or maybe it IS golden!
Shiny, beautiful!
Advait
Next week we'll be doing some follow-up work on the trip, so watch this space!
Animals!
Not just elephants need helping, all animals do...... ok you maybe thinking that I don't care about elephants, but I do I care for every animal! (Even if its ugly!) For example you kill a fly, and you say "oh well it doesn't matter!".....well think if you were that little fly, would you like it? Nothing alive should be chopped down or killed! If some one chops down a tree the damage that happens to the world is incredible:
1. The world isn't as pretty.
2. Trees breath out oxygen like other plants and breath in carbon dioxide.
3. The most important thing is that trees are actually alive! Yeah, you're maybe saying, but they don't talk or walk! But they are still interesting!
4. Trees and plants are important to us because we need oxygen, and we are important to trees and plants because we breath out carbon dioxide!

You see? How are we meant to survive? Ok back on to animals they are also helpful to us. Bees, without them we wouldn't have fruit, honey, and flowers they are actually special to us! Please help me stop this and raise money for all animals! Give me suggestions. Thank you!
Animal cruelty!

This is terrible! We can't have this can we?

Number Balances
We've been working with our new number balances in Year 4.
The two sides of the balance have to balance.
We created lots of balanced numbers. Like this:
We also did the same thing with an online version from nrich:
We made lots of them!
And a whole lot more!
The challenge, though, is to work out where the weights were the next day!
We're writing them as equations:

You'll notice there's more than one weight on some numbers!

We had a look at this game, Weigh It Up, which starts out easy and gets harder too:

Melting / Dissolving Jelly - an experiment
We did an experiment seeing how the temperature of water affects how quickly it melts and dissolves.
We found out that the very hot water does it much quicker!

Swiss Chocolate Tasting
Today 12th of May, I brought in swiss chocolate for the class.
We were going to do a degustation. We called in one group at a time to taste the chocolate.
Some of my friends never tried swiss chocolate, so here was their opportunity.
There were 4 kinds of chocolate bars. Here are the kinds of chocolates:
Milk, Black, Milk with almonds & honey, and finally Milk & Almonds.
They loved tasting!

I used a whiteboard to do a tally chart of there favourite chocolate.
You could choose 1 or 2 votes.
At the end the winning chocolate was honey!
Here are the results of 4G
Then I went to 4B and they loved the tasting too, but the winning chocolate was still honey!
I hope you enjoyed the Swiss Chocolate Degustation!

DOMINO CHALLENGE
As you may remember, I posted my first domino challenge a time ago. Mr. Gregg and Mrs. Baldwin lent me some good domino sets to build up a bigger one. Here is what I did with them.
It was a teamwork project so my brother Telmo worked on the roller coaster structure.
At the end we inserted the little tricks.
And we filled up the fire-stop gaps taking lots of care.
We were finally ready to launch the wave and so we did. Here is the result.
As you have seen it didn't go as we wanted but we learned about the errors.
Does anyone dare to build up a bigger one???
CALCULATIONS
I had 13 domino sets, with 28 pieces each. 13 x 28 = 364 pieces.
I also had 76 little men.
DISTANCE
I measured that each piece took 3cm. 364 x 3 = 1.092 cm= 10.92m.
I measured that each little man took 4cm. 76 x 4= 304 cm = 3.04m.
Total distance. 10.92 + 3.04 = 13.96m.
I took the measuring tape to the garden to see how long it was, and it was looooooong.
TIME
I timed the falling pieces with a stop watch.
30 pieces = 1.42 seconds. (364 ÷ 30) x 1.42 =17.23 seconds.
20 men = 1.23 seconds.(76 ÷ 20) x 1.23 = 4.67.
Total time 17.23 + 4.67 = 21.90 seconds.
BUILD UP
We decided to build half on the table and half on the floor so it took us a looooong time to build up the experiment.
Although we included fire stoppers every number of pieces....
....sometimes it didn't work and it was very frustrating!!!
At the end we inserted the little tricks.
And we filled up the fire-stop gaps taking lots of care.

As you have seen it didn't go as we wanted but we learned about the errors.

Sailing in the Atlantic Ocean
Last week I spent the week sailing on a Yacht in the Atlantic ocean. We started in La Rochelle on the west coast of France. We visited some islands called Isle de Ré, Isle de Yeu and somewhere you might just recognise from the pictures at the end of this article...
On the boat with me there was a French boy called Thomas, and he was 12; and James from year 3 at IST. The skipper was called François, and James' dad was called John and the only woman on the boat was called Elisabeth, she was Thomas's Mum. My dad was there too. So altogether there were 7 on board 'Biclou' - that was the name of the boat.
We had to take knives on this trip, and I was the only one that used it for cutting some ropes. In the picture you can see me cutting a rope that was used to tie the boat to the key. It was called a 'marr'. On a boat you don't actually say rope, because each one has a name. I bought the knife in Spain, and it was an Opinel knife. Somehow we bought exactly the right knife for the boat even though I bought it some months before. It was a real co-incidence, and at the crew meting before the trip the Skipper said that it was 'perfecto'.
The sails on the boat have names too. The front sail was called the foque and the bigger sail was called the grand voile, which just means big sail.
On the first day Thomas and I went to a beach at La Rochelle, and we went exploring on the rocks before the first day's sailing.
This is a Castle on Isle de Yeu which we all cycled to on bikes which we hired for the day when we didn't sail that day. There was a cannon inside, but you couldn't actually go inside the castle on the day we were there. On the way to this island we actually saw dolphins swimming in the sea, but sadly we don't have any pictures.
In this video the waves were really big, and the fastest speed in the whole week was 6.9 knots. This video is when we were on the way to a place called Fort Boyard, where they now do TV shows, and I have watched some of them on TV. The show is Fort Boyard ultimate challenge where people have to do challenges and at the end they put stones with pictures on a map and release gold coins. The team with the most gold wins !
We sailed around Fort Boyard and we discovered just how people now arrive and leave the fort.
If you look at this picture you can see people in a net that they hang on to and they get lowered down on to a boat. This was the last day of sailing, so the last part of the trip was from Fort Boyard back to La Rochelle, and I couldn't believe that I actually saw Fort Boyard in real life !!
The first day we sailed out of port I was steering the boat - this is called taking the barr. There is compass that helps to navigate the direction you want to go and this is called the Cap.

My visit in the Museum of Dalí
Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí I Domènech was born 11. Mai 1904 and died 23. January 1989 he is a famous artist.
He built his own Theatre Museum in 19 century in Figueres his hometown.
(the Theatre Museum of Dalí)
In the museum you can see the most of his artwork, painting, sculptures, jewelry and lots more!
Here are some of my favorite arts!
On the left side can you see some sculptures... When you go up the stairs you watch through a lens and then you see a face of a woman. (right side)
This is my favorite painting!
At the beginning I saw just color, but when I walked a bit away, I saw a dinosaur skeleton.
It was AMAZING!
Here are some jewelry:
